Welcome to Bri Weaves
handwoven for all
Briana Frederick is a weaver, wife, human & goat mama in Louisville, Kentucky. She brings together varied fibers, textures & colors to create functional wearable art, most often in the form of cowls, scarves & neckerchiefs. She also has two Nigora goats, Betty & Boon, who produce fiber for many pieces.
Each warp is uniquely named, & the pieces made are much like siblings; same yarns in one direction (the warp), but different yarns in the other (the weft), resulting in one-of-a-kind finished works, all part of the greater handwoven family by Bri Weaves.

Wove this warp while mulling over the beautiful Inuit concept of shared stewardship, of being temporary guardians of the land we live on. I didn't actually know until recently that shared stewardship was still in place in Greenland. "The concept that ownership is shared collectively is central to the Inuit identity, they say. It has survived 300 years of colonisation and is written into law: People can own houses, but not the land beneath them.” (from an article in Reuters by Jacob Gronholt-Pedersen). Which adds to how preposterous and cruel the idea of the US “buying” Greenland is.
I remember coming to my own realization as a child that the concept of owning land was ridiculous, harmful and I desperately wanted to live in a world where we respected the land and all that it gave us. I believe we all know this deep, generally imperceptibly deep, but are unable to practice much semblance of it today.
So continues my making as a form of therapy, craftivism and, until we return to a full barter system, income. The Shared Stewardship Warp (yes I know its green and Greenland is a misnomer, doesn't change that the color comes to mind). There cowls and eight neckerchiefs available. One other is a rare custom made for ME.
